It’s only a matter of time for Colonel Gaddafi decapitation

                                                  BY MOHAMED MATOPE

The political unrest sweeping through North Africa has finally landed in Libya. Like in Tunisia and Egypt, the uprising began with a relatively organized core of antigovernment opponents in Benghazi, and spontaneously spread to the capital of Tripoli. Colonel Gaddafi responded with a level of violence unseen in either of the other uprisings. His  imported mercenaries combined with military forces loyal to him open fire with heavy weapons against unarmed protesters, air striking on the protesters, shooting out on peaceful funeral processions, and terrorizing urban neighborhoods with random gunfire designed to make people cower in their homes rather than join the uprising .

Despite Colonel Gaddafi’s incoherent rambling, he clearly is fighting not just for power but for his life. Colonel Gaddafi once declared himself “dean of Arab leaders, king of kings, and imams of all Muslims” now battling to retain control of Tripoli and western areas of Libya, he has lost control of all eastern part of the country, numerous government figures including his public security minister, justice minister and seven ambassadors around the world abandoned  his regime. His deputy ambassador to the UN Ibrahim Omar al-Dabashi, defects his government over the bloody crackdown on protesters; he described Colonel Ghaddafi’s actions as “genocide” and pleaded for international intervention. Although Colonel Gaddafi’s power is substantially diminished, he still has the command of the capital and a potent, if diminished, military force with modern Russian jet fighters, helicopters and naval vessels that can bombard the population far distance from offshore.

The events in Libya reflect two important characters of Colonel Gaddafi that is worth remembering: First and foremost he is a ruthless dictator, rather than a centric tactic politician as was portrayed by the west, African knows that long ago. Col Gaddafi has done some good things for Africa that worth recognition, such as his support for ANC, AU, and African economy in general, but Col Gaddafi has also used his oil money to inflict massacre and blood sheds in many parts of Africa.

Many people forget, Col Gaddafi backed Idi Amin on TanzaniaUganda war, he sent over 2,000 troops and advanced military weapons to fight against Tanzania on behalf of Idi Amin. Although Idi Amin forces ware spectacularly defeated by mighty TPDF (Tanzania, peoples defense forces), Col Gaddafi’s military assistance to Amin was arguably major factor in wedging and prolonging of that war. In the 1980’s Colonel Gaddafi used his influence to campaign against Tanzania in Arab League Summit and cost Tanzania much of Arab and Islamic aid and investments. Colonel Gaddafi also had his hands on bloody civil war in Liberia and Sierra Leone; He trained and supported Charles Taylor, former president of Liberia, who currently faces charges of crimes against humanity for his involvement in Sierra Leone conflict.

Secondly, Col Gaddafi is the psychopath tyranny, unlike Mubarak or Ben Ali, Gaddafi is old fashion dictator who could bring the whole house down with him in it. Colonel Gaddafi clearly lost touch with reality, he has made fool and enemy of himself, and his psychosis behaviors have isolated himself with the rest of the world. His bizarre performance on Libyan National TV over past few weeks is sickened and his rambling speeches underlined his desperation.

Colonel Gaddafi has lost everybody with clear mind; he is banking on the loyalty of a close circle of relatives, four of his sons and part of military establishment. The people who are sticking with him have very good reason; fight for their life. They have already committed atrocities of great proportions, they have, and still shooting on innocent civilians, they terrorize the cities, they have tortured peoples, the made hundreds of peoples disappeared, they know that the moment Col Gaddafi forces are defeated, the people’s retribution will be definitive and brutal.

Col Gaddafi vows to fight tooth and nails, because he knows that his back is against the wall, he is boxed in with no where to run. Colonel Gaddafi has always been haunted by superiority complex; he overthrew king Idris in 1969 at the age of 27. He has been president of Libya for over 42 years, he has been in power for more than half of his life, letting it go at this time is not an option. Plus unlike Mubarak, Col Gaddafi doesn’t have many places to run into, the international community has already zeroed in on him by freezing his assets, and open an investigation on him for crimes against humanity, he knows the moment he put his step out of Libya he will be arrested and humiliated.

On his speech last Tuesday Colonel Gaddafi said he has not yet ordered the use of force, not yet ordered one bullet to be fired when he does, everything will burn. Eventually, the people of Libya will win. But it is likely that thousands have already died - and it is abundantly clear that Gaddafi, even in a losing cause, is prepared to commit murder on a genocidal scale. He is not going to leave the way Mussolini of Italy did, or Nicolae Ceausescu of Romania did, he is more like Nero, a Roman emperor 19-68 AD, who set the city of Rome in fire and destroyed most of it, before his death. We should take Colonel Gaddafi at his words, he is determined tyrant. The world community should find the way of cutting him off and separate him from as much of  his military strength as possible, no fly zone resolutions which is currently under consideration with UN is the way to decapitate him.

  1. This is wonderful article ,one thing i like about this article is strictly focus on Africa and African problems.Col Gaddafi is evil ,he made us suffer ,we still remember the lines we were making for food.He has Tanzania bloods on his hands ,he killed our soldiers,he shoot on us too.He has been getting away with things for a long time ,now its time for him to pay the price for his actions.I will add he also caused a lot of trouble in Chad,,he supported Mengistu Mariamu of Ethiopia ,he is inbed with Mugabe .Good article.

  2. I'm glad you wrote arguably gaddafi was involved in wedging Tanzania -Uganda war.I reserched on that one before, and there is no way to get to the bottom of it.it's so ambiguous. One thing for sure is ,Amin would not go to war with Tanzania if he had no one to back him up,Gaddafi at time was at his peak,he had money, and influence on the Arab league ,so for crazy Amin to get guarantee from him was enough to push him into the war.Thats the only argument for it you can find.Yes Gaddafi had showered Tanzanian bloods and all Tanzanians should happy that now he is in trouble.

  4. Good writting , Gaddafi should not be recognized for anything good he did for Africa,he is a master of manipulation ,he helped south Africa just because he wanted to get even with US.He recruited Charles Teylor to extend his influence to the west ,he backed Idi Amin just to make sure he has trouble maker in the east.He gave all Tanzania a middle finger after the war ,he hosted Amin after his fleed from Uganda,he gave Amin his doughter just to make Tanzanians mad.then he punish every Tanzania after the war for cuting off all aids from Arab land .He is the enemy of tanzania and he should go to HELL.

Matope ,i have to tell you one thing,i'm your fun ,i've been following your writtings and i see you growing. This is good article.exept one thing part of the reasons we went to war with Amin is Nyerere entised him ,He made Tanzania a suncruary for ant Amin movement,he kept Obote in Tanzania ,He allowed Idrisa to live in Tanzania ,Ugandan Bishop too was in Tanzania ,he allowed Ugandan lebels to organize in Tanzania,He campagne agaist Amin on AU leadership. He gave a crazyman a liquor, bad combination. But this does not justfy Amin invasion to Tanzania ,what i'm saying is we played part in starting that war.

  8. Guys, let me weigh in here, this article is very good but not objective. first of all, there is no any ordinally Tanzanian who would know the exact cause of Tanzania/Uganda war, except those people who were in power! What we see depends mainly on what we look for. During uganda/Tanzania war, we saw Ghaddafi as dirt because that is what we were looking for. Amin's Sympathizers also would argue the same thing for Israel. For my friends who are btn ages of 30 and 5o, and grew up in Tanzania, how many times did we sing Kambona mmm mmmmm, Ameolewa-Wapi, kule Ulaya! was Kambona real this bad to made the Tanzania National Security threat or was just propaganda of people in power as an an effort to suppress any kind of ideological difference? What about Banda wa malawi katuvalia Ngozi ya simba-Do we real know what was the problem btn Banda and Nyerere? Remember, by then we had only Radio Tanzania Dar es salaam as a media outlet-What do you expect to here from one state controlled media outlet?
For those who are arguing that Gaddafi, is using military power with heavy weapons to suppress unarmed protesters-what kind of TV or Youtube outlet are you watching? Time and time again, we have seen images of those protesters especially in the Eastern part being armed with AK47, Rocket Launches, RPG's, etc-Assuming ur the leader, how do control the armed protesters?. The rule of Engagement is to use minimum force enough to suppress, to you what is the minimum force to subdue protesters with AK 47 and RPG's? to use Arrows and spears? for those who are in United States, let us assume those Wisconsin Protesters at the Madison State Capital had AK47, what do you think the Governor or even president would do? Step down? or would order Heavily armerd Special operation Force Unit to step in? When we analyse this things, let us put emotions aside, and look at things as they unfold, gather information from the media, and make an informed judgement-but don't fall prey to the media Propaganda!!

  9. The last commenter talk about been objective, what kind of objectivity do we need .Yes We had one national Radio at a time, but we have witneses, soldiers who went to the war, retired gov. officials,Nyerere is dead ,people are free to talk.My uncle fought that war ,he told me every detail of that war ,he told me some mistakes our troops made, the execution of the war and underestimation of the amin's troops.I think Mr Matope did his reserch before he wrote this article.I like the other commenter who said he had reserched on the war.We need people who writes more about the issues that matters to our country.

  10. i don't care what rule of engagement are involved,if you are president of a country and the only way for you to maintain power is by shooting on your civilians,or airstriking your own peoples ,you sucks. Its time to go.I don't see why people symphasize with colonel Mummar Gaddafi,he is nuckle head, don't you look at his pictures ,he is psycho.

  11. As usual man, this is a great article. I concur with you and I remember that I was very young when Col Gaddafi was aiding his fellow dictator Idi Amin during those years and it was extremely unpleasant for Ugandans and Tanzanians. Although, thankfully our Tanzania force under many brilliant generals, such as Mr. Musuguri, were able to conquer him and consequently he fled to Libya.

Additionally, Gaddafi's tenure was known for affiliating with state sponsored terrorism and assisation of expatriate opposition leaders during the 1970s and 1980s and that is why he has nowhere to go and no country will dare to help him as you mentioned earlier.

Ultimately, my personal perspective is that a tyrant like Gadaffi won't surrender and depart Libya alive which is unfortunate because it will lead to a lot of blood shed and death for Libya's citizens. For example, Adolph Hilter, Stalin and many other dictators ended up being killed or caught. I think Gaddaffi knows that too.
