YOUNG entrepreneurs in Tanzania are being taught the skills needed to make it in the world of business — by the University of Bolton.
With the University of Dar es Salaam in the African country, the university has developed workshops in which students learn textile technologies, fashion and garment technology, as well as entrepreneurial skills.
The £60,000 scheme over 18 months is being funded by the British Council and the Department for Business Innovation and Skills to develop the curriculum and run the teaching programme.
Teaching started in January and the batch of 160 students will qualify in October.
Workshops are taught under the guidance of Leonard Mwaikambo, senior lecturer in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the University of Dar es Salaam, and Trevor Rowe, senior lecturer in textiles at Bolton.
Mr Rowe said: “We hope this is the start of a partnership that will develop over the coming years.
“Tanzania is eager to develop its economy, to move beyond exporting its raw materials, to developing the export of products created with those raw materials.”
