The annual Tanzanian Trunk Show which brings items from around the world to Fond du Lac will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19, at First Presbyterian Church, 1225 Fourth St.
Now in its seventh year, it supports "Empowering Women's Future - AIDS Orphan Sewing Project" in Bukoba, Tanzania, East Africa.
The "Fond du Lac – Becoming A Fair Trade Town" Initiative Kick-Off will be held at 5:45 p.m.
Fair Trade is a market-based economic system in which workers, artisans and farmers in developing countries are paid a living wage for their work using environmentally sustainable practices.
Fair Trade Fond du Lac is working to make the community a Fair Trade Town, said spokesperson Anne Lemke.
"A Fair Trade Town is a community of thoughtful and inspired retailers, community organizations, religious communities and consumers who want to use their buying power to improve the lives of others," Lemke said.
The goal is to have local government pass a Fair Trade Town resolution, she said.
New this year at the trunk show is a drumming circle from 6 to 7 p.m. hosted by Robin Cardell. No experience is needed. Donations are invited.
The Miichi Women's Group display will offer photos and mementos of a University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh student trip to Tanzania.
Other highlights include sale of Just Fare Market items from around the world, supper and dessert available from the Holy Family Conference of the St Vincent de Paul Society, live music provided by Jack Talbot and friends, traditional Tanzanian jewelry by Tanzania native Kanunga Moreto, and a presentation of donations by the "Bible With Bagels" adult education group from Pilgrim United Church of Christ.
