All Those Tattoos
At last count, Rihanna has at least 17 tattoos ... but some have caused more of an uproar than others. The first time anyone really took issue was when she got a tat of a gun on her right side just weeks after Brown assaulted her. At the time, her tattoo artist Bang Bang explained, “I think it's very empowering, very protective.” But she apparently needed a little more protection three years later, in June 2012, when she inked herself with a deadly weapon once again when she got a falcon in the shape of a gun on the top of her right foot. She later tweeted she chose the winged creature because they “never close their eyes during sleep.” Three months later, she debuted perhaps her biggest piece of body art yet: the Egyptian goddess of rebirth, Isis, which spans the entire underside of her breasts ... in honor or late grandmother. (No, really.)
She Cut Her Hair Off and Dyed It Black
Rihanna has had a dozen different hairstyles over the years – long, short, shaved, curly, blonde, red – but the first cut was the most shocking. In 2007, she lopped off her long locks into an edgy pixie cut and dyed it black to coincide with the release of her third album, Good Girl Gone Bad ... against the advice of her record company. The “Umbrella” singer later said she did it in order to make herself stand out from the other young women in pop music at the time. "I felt like the whole world had long, curly, flowy blond hair. Ciara, Beyonce, Mariah, Christina Milian. Everybody wanted to be like everybody else. So I cut my hair and [Def Jam] made me put my long hair back in [as extensions]. The second time, I didn't have any discussions, nothing. I just cut it, I dyed it black, I went into the studio making music my way. I found myself all at once.”
Her Outspoken Love of Marijuana
It’s illegal in most states, but that hasn’t stopped Rihanna from using marijuana on a regular basis. And she doesn’t just smoke the drug behind closed doors. Her Instagram feed is full of photos of her puffing and passing, even with Brown. In fact, she recently replaced him with her other love. On February 14, she declared “Mary Jane will be my Valentine” along with an Instagram pic of a cloud of marijuana smoke. Later in the day, she posted this image of a “bouquet” of marijuana with the caption, “Roses are green! Somebody knows how to make me happy.
Her Relationship With Chris Brown
Rihanna and Chris Brown were just a couple of teenagers when they met at the Vibe Awards in 2005. After more than a year of romance rumors, it wasn’t until May 2008 when he finally admitted they were an item. But their seemingly-perfect relationship was exposed as anything but in February 2009 when, following a pre-Grammys party, Brown beat Rihanna so brutally she required hospitalization. Less than three weeks later, she shocked everyone when she was photographed exiting a private plane in Miami, where Brown had been relaxing with friends like he didn’t have a care in the world. Although the two were never seen together in public for years after that, there were never-ending reports that they were secretly hooking up ... despite the fact that there was a restraining order barring him from even contacting her (and the fact that he had a girlfriend, Karrueche Tran). By early 2012, the rumors turned out to be real when she released a remix of her song “Birthday Cake” featuring her abusive ex. Last October, Brown revealed in a personal video he tweeted that he was in love with both Rihanna and Tran – but it looks like the more famous one truly won his heart. Brown and Rihanna have been busy flaunting their love, including a PDA fest at the Grammys ... but just three days later, they ignored each other at L.A. club Playhouse. As of press time, the two seem to be off, but judging from their past history, the split probably won’t last for long.
She Shocked an Irish Farmer With Her Boobs
She may have found love in a hopeless place, but one Irish farmer didn’t care. In September 2011, 61-year-old Alan Graham kicked Rihanna off his private property after he allowed a film crew to use his farm in a scene for her “We Found Love” music video. But once he caught a glimpse of the singer topless, he demanded they call it a wrap at once. “The state of undress was becoming inappropriate,” Graham told the U.K.’s The Telegraph. “I requested that they stop filming and they did ... I had a conversation with Rihanna. She understood where I was coming from. We shook hands and parted company on good terms.”
She Dumped a Questionable Substance on Her Bodyguard’s Head
Rihanna’s love of marijuana is well known, but is she into harder stuff than that? While hanging out at Coachella in 2012, she used her bodyguard’s bald head as a surface to roll up a cigarette filled with what looked to be a white mass – and then posted a photo of it on Twitter along with the caption, “Memories don’t live like people do.” But neither did that tweet because she quickly deleted it after commenters noted the white substance. Although RiRi never clarified what it truly was, the general consensus is that it was in fact weed, but when the camera’s flash hit it, it made it appear white. What do you think?
Her Rumored Affair With Jay-Z
Did Rihanna let Jay-Z stand under her umbrella? The singer and the man who discovered her have long been dogged by rumors of an affair, which she first addressed in 2008 when she told Cosmo that it was putting a strain on their business relationship."I felt self-conscious around him until he took me aside and said that I just had to ignore it." Still, when Jay and Beyoncé tied the knot in April 2008, she reportedly demanded Rihanna not be invited. All those extramarital rumors bubbled up again just days after Bey gave birth to their first child. Blue Ivy, in January 2012 when he gifted his sexy protégé with a black Jeep Wrangler SUV. Rihanna tweeted a photo of the car, which was decorated with a red-and-gold bow, along with a lyric from Jay-Z’s song, “On To the Next One.”
Supporting Chris Brown in Court for Probation Hearing
After pleading guilty to beating Rihanna in February 2009, Chris Brown was sentenced to 180 days of community labor and five years of probation. Although he claimed to have finished his community service in his hometown of Richmond, Virginia, prosecutors have recently dug up some pretty strong evidence that many of those hours were “fraudulent.” On February 6, Brown was due in court for a hearing on the matter and by his side was none other than Rihanna ... the person he abused, thus landing him in hot water. According to reports, she blew her beau a kiss before taking a seat behind him in the courtroom. As they left the courthouse, Rihanna could be seen trailing behind Brown as he walked ahead to an awaiting car.
Her Disastrous ‘777’
TourIn honor of her seventh album, Unapologeticin November 2012, Rihanna invited 250 journalists and fans to join her “777” tour (seven countries in seven days) – but it was anything but lucky. After partying with everyone on a Delta 777 jet on the first day, the singer pretty much went MIA after that, even though those aboard were promised access to her for interviews. But that was the least of their problems. Many journalists complained of lack of sleep and food as they were dragged all over the world. (One Australian radio disc jockey was so delirious he stripped off his clothes and streaked throughout the aisles of the plane mid-flight!) After reports of the journalists and fans' perils popped up online, Rihanna apologized: “It's impossible to spend time with everybody, and I'm sorry I didn't. But this was excellent and I would definitely do it again.” But would any of those people want to join her?
Her Reported Sex Tape With J-Cole
Rihanna’s never hid her kinky side – she once revealed that she likes to be "tied up and spanked" in an interview with Rolling Stone – but the world almost got to witness it for themselves. In August 2011, Hustlerinsisted it had a sex tape of her with singer J-Cole, which was reportedly discovered after he lost his phone. “We have seen it and we do not know what we are going to do with it yet,” the XXX company said at the time. Ultimately, they were never able to decide or someone took it off their hands because a tape of Rihanna and J-Cole, who opened for her on her “Loud” tour that year, never was released.
