MR. MAKALA JASPER'S REMARKS THANKING
THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY/BUFFET AWARD FOR THE AWARD,
WASHINGTON D.C., USA, 16TH JUNE, 2016
Jambo,
Your excellences,
Ladies & Gentlemen,

First and foremost I would like to thank God our Almighty for keeping us alive today.
I am very much honored to be here tonight. It's a chance to express how sincerely grateful I am to the people who helped me along the way to become a winner of the National Geographic Society/Buffet Award for Leadership Conservation in Africa 2016. In April this year, I was also presented by Her Royal Highness Princess Anne of England, the International prestigious Whitley Award 2016 for nature conservation worth 35,000 GBP. Therefore it is indeed an award season to me. Two Awards in 2 months!

Secondly my special gratitudes go to my parents who provided me with valuable education that made me what I am today.
Also in a very special way, I would like to thank the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania for providing an enabling policy and legal framework for community forest management. The framework empowers communities to secure 100% legal ownership over their forests. In this regard I would like to humbly request his Excellency Wilson Masilingi, Tanzanian Ambassador to the USA, who is here with us to-night to convey my special thanks to His Excellency Dr. John Pombe Joseph Magufuli, President of the United Republic of Tanzania.

My achievements are a result of good teamwork with my colleagues in Lindi Region and Tanzania in general. I thank them very much.

I would also like to thank in a special way, our development partners for their financial, technical and other support to Mpingo conservation & Development Initiative (MCDI). They have been extraordinarily generous and really made this award possible.  I will only mention a few of them. Conservation Leadership Programme at Fauna and Flora International in UK for nominating me for this award, WWF Tanzania for their ongoing support as a partner and as a Donor for about 12 years now, Comic Relief in the UK, Maliasili Initiatives in USA and many more others.
You all laid the strong foundation of the good success we are celebrating today.
Many thanks to National Geographic Society for organizing this event and for recognizing my past outstanding accomplishments to the forest conservation in Tanzania. I would like to say this will never end here. I am passionate to continue doing this for the rest of my life.

Last but not least to the Buffet foundation for Donating the award.
This is an encouragement for me to support responsible forest conservation in Tanzania, Africa and the globe as a whole. It is through forest resources we are improving local livelihoods at the same time protecting wildlife habitats.

I dedicate this award to my Country Tanzania and to all those who care about conservation.

Asanteni sana, Thank you very much!
