The basis for the United States and Tanzania relationship began in 1961 with the friendship between former presidents Mwalimu Julius Nyerere (Baba wa Taifa) and John F. Kennedy. They established a relationship grounded in mutual respect and the desire to achieve the same goals: Tanzania's growth and development.
