Fundraising campaign in Philadelphia to fight ebola in West Africa

On Wednesday January 13, 2015, the Mayor’s Commission on African and Caribbean Immigrant Affairs in Philadelphia along with local Coalition of West African Countries Affected by Ebola hosted a special conference to launch a fundraising campaign designed to help fight the Ebola virus in West Africa. More than hundred people attended the event, which was emceed by Councilwoman Jannie L. Blackwell. Speakers included Ambassadors Mamady Conde of Guinea, Bokary Steven of Sierra Leone, and AU Special Envoy to the United States Amina Salim Ali. They all spoke about the need for an increase international response to fight the Ebola virus in West Africa, an outbreak declared in September 2014 by the United Nations as a threat to peace. The disease has killed thousands of people in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea where economic progress is also being hampered by stigmatization.
