The earthquake was measured by the U.S. Geological Survey on Monday at 7:23 am (Japan time), was located near the east coast of Honshu at a depth of 3.7 miles (5.9 kilometers).
Following the earthquake, the Japan Meteorological Agency informed its citizens that Miyagi Prefecture could experience a tsunami of up to 1.6 feet. The tsunami warning has since been cancelled and local residents were asked to remain alert, in case anything changed.
So far, there has been no reports of damages or injuries sustained as a result of the earthquake.
Japan is still attempting to recover from 9.0 magnitude earthquake, which occurred on March 11. Dozens of aftershocks, ranging from 5.0 to 6.0 in magnitude strike the area daily.
This is the second largest quake recorded since March 11. A magnitude of 6.4 hit the same area on Friday.
