Influenced by a Masai blanket from his Kenyan childhood, Louis Vuitton's style manager, Kim Jones, took the spring/Summer 2012 collection on an exotic journey. Travel formed a central theme to the West-meets-Africa show. Gold and navy tops made from raffia, alligator jackets, midnight blue silk mohair suits, and a sea of red and blue plaids, made this show a real extravaganza. Seemingly large emphasis was placed on sandals, some of which took a leaf out of Germans' books and were worn with socks. Sticking with the travel theme, clothes were versatile and suitcase-friendly, such as the fold away parka. The more Western looks were classic and elegant, with a casual feel as suit pants were rolled up. The show was sophisticated with an adventurous old-school charm..

Louis Vuitton began on their 'maasai' series with the inspiration behind their Ornamental Tribal Earrings in the 2010 collection. Inspired by traditional Masai necklaces, the ornement trical collection is glamorous with harmonious circles and vibrantly colored precious stones, including sapphires, sperratite and diamonds.
