Airline offers discounts to Tanzania

South African Airways has a sale on airfare to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, starting at $1,300 US round trip (plus taxes) for travel from several Canadian and U.S. cities to Dar es Salaam for travel between Sept. 12 and Dec. 9, which is Tanzania's 50th anniversary. I checked on the airline's website this week and the fare from Vancouver (with connections through Washington D.C. and Johannesburg) was $2,520. But with taxes the round-trip ticket comes to several hundred more.

There is lots to see: The country boasts 15 national parks and 31 game reserves. It is the home of the tallest mountain in Africa, the legendary Mount Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti, the world acclaimed Ngorongoro Crater, Olduvai Gorge - known as the cradle of mankind - the Selous game reserve, Ruaha, now the second-largest national park in Africa, the spice islands of Zanzibar and seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites. English and Kiswahili are the country's two official languages; and officials want to highlight Tanzania's peace and stability. For more information about Tanzania, visit tanzaniatourism.go.tz. The South African Airways fare must be purchased by Aug. 31 on SAA's website, flysaa.com or by calling 1-800-722-9675.
