Mama Kikwete shows her support for Tanzanian Food Security, Health and Nutrition during visit with
Africare, USAID and other US NGOs

Washington, DC, May 18 – First Lady of Tanzania Her Excellency Salma Kikwete joined the staff of Africare, USAID and several US based NGOs at the Africare House for a briefing on the organizations’ work focused on health, nutrition and food security in Tanzania.  Recently, Africare was selected as the lead implementing partner on a $30 million 5-year nutrition program under USAID’s Feed the Future initiative.

“We are both honored and excited at the opportunity we have to work with the people of Tanzania, to ensure that mothers and children get the nutrition they need, “ commented E. Diane White, Africare’s Chief Operations Officer.  “Improvements in health and nutrition are essential in order to unlock the enormous human potential of Tanzania in particular and Africa in general.”

“Tanzania is a leader in the Malaria fight,” said David Bowen CEO of Malaria No More. “We congratulate first lady Mama Kikwete of Tanzania on the country’s progress and her leadership and commitment. “

“USAID is thrilled to support Tanzania’s efforts to improve health, nutrition and food security,” explained Laura Birx, Food Security & Nutrition Specialist at USAID. “Mama Kikwete’s efforts echo the G8’s plan announced today to try to lift 50 million people out of poverty and to address global hunger and malnutrition, which is devastating the lives of millions of children around the world.

“The First Lady of Tanzania is clearly an ally and a champion for issues of health, nutrition and food security. Africare looks forward to working with her, local NGOs and the Tanzanian government to see a day when no child in Tanzania goes to bed hungry or malnourished,” said E. Diane White, COO of Africare.
