The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in
collaboration with the with Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots, Global Network of
Religions for Children (GNRC), United Nations Association (UNA) and Youth of
United Nations (YUNA), cordially invites
the media to the commemoration to mark the International Day of Peace,
to be held at the Don Bosco Hall,Upanga
Saturday, 21 September, 2013, at 1000-1200 noon.
The theme for this year’s
commemoration is “Education for Peace”, aiming to link the
importance of education for achieving a Culture of Peace. The Education for
Peace theme supports the UN Secretary General’s Global Education First
Initiative (GEFI) and highlight the importance of fostering global citizenship
through education.
The Guest of Honor will be
the Former President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Alhaj Ali Hassan
Mwinyi. Invited Guests includes Government officials, members of Diplomatic
Corps, Youths, General public and the media.
The International Day of Peace was established in
1981 by resolution 36/67 of the United Nations General Assembly to coincide
with its opening session which was held annually on the third Tuesday of
September. The first ever peace day was observed in September 1982. In 2001,
the UN General Assembly by unanimous vote adopted resolution 55/282 which
established 21 September as an official annual day of non-violence and
cease-fire.
