President Yoweri Museveni
Ugandan President, Yoweri Museveni has summoned all National Resistance Movement (NRM) aspirants eyeing the Luweero District woman MP seat to persuade them to step down for Rebecca Nalwanga, the official party candidate.
Nalwanga is facing competition from other NRM aspirants including Lillian Nakate, Elizabeth Lugudde, Ritah Mugalu, and Patricia Magala who are threatening to contest as independents.
They accuse the party secretariat of hand picking Nalwanga to contest in the district woman MP by-election yet she is unpopular. On Tuesday, more 2000 NRM members in the district convened at Diocese Pastoral Center to resolve the stalemate.
During the meeting, President Yoweri Museveni thanked the aspirants for showing interest to contest on the NRM ticket. He however, said it was impossible to conduct primary elections to select a candidate because of the nominations, which are scheduled for Monday May 5th.
Museveni asked the aspirants to be patient until the party primaries are conducted in 2015 and invited them for dialogue at state house Entebbe this evening.
Abdul Nadduli, the Central Region NRM Chairperson says the aspirants agreed to pull out during a meeting with Richard Tadwonga, the Minister for general duties once they are deployed to serve elsewhere.
He also noted that since the aspirants had already spent money in informal campaigns he believes President Yoweri Museveni will ensure they are compensated as they pullout.
