Economists at the World Bank
Economists support the core operational work of the Bank. They
provide the basic economic analysis underpinning country assistance strategies
and the soundness of the portfolio. They are conversant with the latest
approaches to economic development and assess, advise and contribute
substantially to sectoral, micro, and macro policy issues in operational and
research contexts. They contribute to, write, and manage chapters of or whole
economic reports, sector reports or research projects. They participate in or
lead operational missions including the identification and appraisal of Structured
Adjustment Loans (SALs) and Sector SALs, as well as sector focused lending, and
are conversant with a broad range of social and structural issues and
interdisciplinary approaches.
Responsibilities
- Assessing
sectoral policy issues and understanding the relationships of these
policies with the boarder macroeconomic framework.
- Assessing
the soundness of lending portfolio.
- Diagnosing
and developing solutions to sector economic problems.
- Responsibility
for restructuring and regulation in assigned sectors.
- Conceptualizing,
designing and implementing sector economic work programs.
- Identifying,
appraising, negotiating and supervising sector lending operations.
- Preparing
sector policy and strategy work.
- Computing
effective rates of protection, specifying and estimating sectoral models.
- Utilizing
cost benefit and other quantitative analytical techniques.
- Actively
promoting team work and collaboration in a matrix environment to achieve
work objectives.
Eligibility
- At
least a Master's degree in economics, for Research Economists a Ph.D. is
more typical, and a minimum of 5 years broad experience in economic work,
including knowledge and experience in public finance, labor economics and
specific micro/sector fields of specialty.
- State
of the art knowledge in economic specialty and ability to address issues
at broader level
- In
depth understanding of Bank policies and practices in related
economic/country area
- Knowledge
of developing country conditions related to area of specialty
- For
micro economists, knowledge of public finance, labor economics and
specific micro/sector fields of specialty
- Leadership
ability in all phase of project/research cycle
- Ability
to ensure the quality of portfolio performance
- Proven
ability to conceptualize, design and implement major projects
- Ability
to promote client/beneficiary participation and commitment to ensuring
implementation and longer-term sustainability of projects/programs
- Ability
to operate effectively in a matrix management environment, both as team
leader and team member
- Ability
to identify complex issues and to respond and handle accordingly; does not
add unnecessary complexity to tasks or projects.
- Ability
to lead a team of professionals in the execution of major projects/tasks
- Ability
to coach, mentor and develop more junior staff
- Ability
to deal sensitively in multi-cultural environments and build effective
working relations with clients and colleagues
- Effective verbal and written communications skills
