Many Zanzibaris living in Toronto took application forms to open Diaspora accounts and Online Mobile Banking with the People's Bank of Zanzibar Limited, during a special BBQ event which was organised on the 6th of June, 2015, by the Zanzibar-Canadian Diaspora Association (ZACADIA) and sponsored by the People’s Bank of Zanzibar Limited.
It was a great surprise to the organizers of the event to have noted that not many Zanzibaris in Toronto knew that you could check all your accounts online with the People's Bank of Zanzibar, transfer cash between accounts, keep standing orders and even upload payrolls. All of these operations the attendees of the event were informed could be performed online, at a finger click, without visiting the bank.
In the same event, more than 45 Zanzibari-Canadians showed great interest to purchase apartments from a project being developed by the Zanzibar Social Security Fund (ZSSF) at Mbweni in Zanzibar.

ZSSF is the second Zanzibari organization, which has gone far beyond its borders to entice Zanzibaris living abroad to participate in its projects.
The first organization to do so was the People’s Bank of Zanzibar which since early 2012, has been working hand in glove with Zacadia on its worldwide remittance project, as a result today hundreds of Tanzanians are sending money every month back home through the services of the bank in collaboration with a London-based financial institution calledWorldRemit.
The remittance service through the People’s Bank of Zanzibar is considered by many in the Diaspora to be of low cost, simpler, quicker, efficient, trusted and above all money can be sent to any mobile phone number in Tanzania - from anywhere and at any time. To send money to Tanzania from the Diaspora you just need to visit the bank’s website which is www.pbzltd.com and the rest of the steps are just like counting 1,2,3….
Of late, Zacadia has grown to become an important bridge linking local organizations in Zanzibar with Diaspora communities.

It was officially announced during the event that Vodacom which has more than 21 million phone subscribers in Tanzania has also joined the People's Bank remittance service bandwagon.
With this new addition, the mobile remittance services are now operated by the bank through all the Big-4 mobile service providers in the country, i.e Tigo, Zantel, Airtel and Vodacom; but, recipients in Tanzania need to register before they could receive money on their mobile phones.
Tanzania has more than 28 million phone subscribers - mobile and wired networks, with majority being mobile users.
Thus, the action taken by the People’s Bank of Zanzibar in utilising the services of the Big-4, is a great leap by the bank in the right direction.
