Kenyan police apologise after mistaking teenage girl for deadly terrorist

The 15-year-old girl was "harassed by police" after they wrongly identified her as Brit Samantha Lewthwaite – commonly known as the White Widow who was married to 7/7 bomber Germaine Lindsay.

The Kenyan government has said sorry to the American girl and her family and offered an all-expenses-paid-trip as compensation for the shocking error.

The teen, who has not been identified, was in the area of Mlolongo, outside the Kenyan capital Nairobi, when she was approached by the blundering officers.

Lewthwaite, 30, is suspected of being a key figure in al-Shabaab, a Somalian terror group associated with al-Qaida.

The group rose to prominence after carrying out the deadly assault on Nairobi's Westgate shopping mall that claimed 67 lives last year.

Lewthwaite, originally from Buckinghamshire, is wanted on charges relating to possession of explosives and conspiracy to commit a felony dating back to December 2011.

The last confirmed sighting of the White Widow was in Mombasa three years ago when she escaped from police after using a false South African passport.

Lewthwaite, from Aylesbury, is thought to have used the alias Natalie Webb to flee the country.

Detectives leading the search for the terrorist have admitted the trail on the fugitive has gone cold.
