A Senior Director of Neurosurgery at Medanta Hospital in India, Dr. Karanjit Singh Narang, has urged citizens with brain, spine and neck problems to seek professional advice before considering surgery or traveling abroad for treatment.
He made the remarks in Dar es Salaam during a medical camp held on September 11 and 12, 2026 at Tiba Healthcare Ltd Hospital in Upanga. The camp was organized in collaboration with MedIncredi (Medical Travel).
Dr. Karanjit warned people against seeking massage services or having their necks manipulated by untrained individuals, including barbers, saying such practices can cause permanent nerve damage and even paralysis.
He said spinal cord damage is difficult to reverse because brain and spinal cord cells do not easily regenerate.
He added that most people with back and neck pain do not require surgery. Many can find relief through lifestyle changes, exercises and other non-surgical treatments. For severe cases, there are modern minimally invasive surgical techniques available.
