Egypt have opened the inaugural Nile Basin championship with a 5-1 thrashing of Tanzania in Group A on Wednesday.

There were also wins for Kenya and Uganda.

Also in Group A, the Cranes beat Burundi 3-1, while a first-half penalty gave the Harambee Stars the victory over Sudan in Group B.

Guest team DR Congo from three-team Group B was the only side not in action on the opening day, but play their first match against Kenya on Saturday.

Both Tanzania and Burundi will be looking for their first victory in the competition when they face each other in Group A on Saturday.

Meanwhile hosts Egypt will be keen to build on their opening victory when they face Uganda on the same day.

The Egyptian Football Association cancelled the opening ceremony after an attack on a church in Alexandria on Saturday in which 23 people died.

The aim of this tournament is to create awareness to safeguard the water resource to benefit of future generations among countries sharing the Nile River Basin.
