Talk about the tables turning. Chris Brown's father has said he wishes his son weren't dating Rihanna, even after Brown was convicted of assaulting the pop star.
Speaking to the New York Daily News, Clinton Brown said he fears his son's tumultuous relationship with Rihanna could end in tragedy, like many other pop stars' stories. "I hate to use examples, but Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Amy Winehouse — I mean I could go on and on!" he said.
After Brown brutally beat Rihanna on the eve of the 2009 Grammy Awards, the couple ended their relationship, but rekindled it in 2012 to the dismay of many people who couldn't understand why Rihanna would get back together with someone who abused her. But Brown's father says he fears the relationship could be toxic for his son as well.
"You have to have a balance in a relationship. You have to have someone who is spontaneous and whimsical but you also have to have someone who is grounded and logical," he said, implying that Rihanna lacks the groundedness he thinks would be good for his son.
If Brown's behavior since they've gotten back together is any indication, he could definitely use a grounding force in his life. In January he got into a fight with singer Frank Ocean, in which Ocean alleged Brown threatened to shoot him over a parking space. In February, Brown wrecked his Porsche by crashing it into a wall. Most recently, he was charged with failing to complete the community service required after assaulting Rihanna. After Brown brutally beat Rihanna on the eve of the 2009 Grammy Awards, the couple ended their relationship, but rekindled it in 2012 to the dismay of many people who couldn't understand why Rihanna would get back together with someone who abused her. While admitting that he understands his son's attraction to the singer -- “She’s beautiful, she’s exotic, she’s successful,” Clinton said – he confessed he'd prefer it if his son dated one of the other ladies in his life.
"I personally liked Jordin Sparks. She’s a wholesome young lady, very pretty," he said, referring to the "American Idol" winner who once collaborated with his son on her song "No Air." He also said he liked his son's ex-girlfriend Karrueche Tran, whom he reportedly dated until shortly before he and Rihanna got back together. "I liked her a lot," he said of the model. "They seemed to get [along] terrifically. Whenever she was around me, the quiet, meek, accommodating, respectful image is what she portrayed."
It's debatable whether someone quiet and meek is the best match for Brown, but let's hope he cleans up his act no matter whom he's dating.
