Mother shot holding baby: Police hunt for mom’s killer

An Alabama mother was shot and killed while holding her newborn baby, NBC News reported April 30.

Sheri Williams, 24, was holding her 10-day-old baby in her arms in the doorway of her apartment in Gate City, Ala., when she was shot and killed. She was shot in the face, police said.

The bullet apparently was not intended for the young mom, though. The suspect had intended to shoot a nearby man but shot the mom holding the baby, killing her, Birmingham Police Department spokesman Sgt. Johnny Williams said. After being shot, the mother stumbled back into the apartment and fell on a couch still holding the baby in her arms. The mother died at the scene.

The baby was not hurt, police said.
Two unidentified men were involved in a verbal altercation at a grocery store roughly 100 yards away from the apartment complex where Sheri Williams lived, authorities said. The conflict between the two men escalated, and one of the men chased the other down the street and fired a gun, Sgt. Williams said.

The mother was hit by the stray bullet while holding her infant.
