The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in collaboration with the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) and Tanzania Police Forces cordially invites the media to the wreath-laying ceremony to mark the commemoration of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, to be held atMnazi Mmoja Heroes Grounds, on Wednesday, 29 May, 2013, at 0930am.
The Guest of honor at the ceremony will be the Minister of Home Affairs, Hon. Dr. Emmanuel Nchimbi. The theme chosen for this year's commemoration is “United Nations Peacekeeping:  Adapting to New Challenges,” in recognition of the fact that International peace and security needs are changing rapidly, and UN Peacekeeping is adapting to meet these new challenges. UN Peacekeeping delivers security, political and early peacebuilding support to help countries affected by conflict create the conditions for lasting peace. With a 65-year track record, UN Peacekeeping continues to adapt to the new threats and challenges to help people and countries coming through some of the world’s most destructive conflicts.
The programme of the day will include a guard of honor, presentation of messages from the Government and the UN Secretary-General, wreath laying session and performances.
The annual observance of International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers was established by General Assembly Resolution 57/129 in 2002. The Day is marked on 29 May each year to pay tribute to “all men and women who have served and continue to serve in United Nations Peacekeeping operations for their high level of professionalism, dedication and courage, and to honor the memory of those who have lost their lives in the cause of peace”.
