Dar hospital to conduct free eye check-up for residents

Dr Rajni Kanabar
Residents of Dar es Salaam will receive free eye check up and related optical ailments for 30 days during a clinic organised by Regency Medical Centre slated to run from June 5 to July 5, this year.

The eye check up camp will be at the hospital’s branch clinic in Kisutu, Dar es Salaam and all age groups are urged to attend.

The main focus of the camp is to address the reversible causes of blindness like cataract, trachoma, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and other eye diseases that causes needless blindness to the people.
According to a statement issued by the Regency Centre administration, the camp will also focus on the people with visual impairment caused by refractive errors in their eye which can easily be rectified with proper prescribed eye glasses.

“We would encourage more children to come for this preventive eye check up camp since many of the children are not aware of their visual impairment. The eye camp will also focus on other related eye problems which may require medication or minor surgeries,” reads part of the released statement.

“The first 50 diagnosed patients with cataract will undergo suture-less late eye surgery known as PHACO Eye Surgery with appropriate Intra-Ocular Lenses. This will require no post operative admission at all,” the statement reveals.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam yesterday, the Centre’s Chairman, Dr Rajn Kanabar said the camp will start from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm at Regency Satellite Centre, Zanaki Street and will base on a first come first serve.

“We are looking for a donor who can contribute to the rest of the cost of the first 50 cataract PHACO Surgery patients. All the prescribed eye glasses and medicines will be given at subsidised rates. This is a golden opportunity for all patients with visual impairment to take advantage of the exhaustive preventive eye check up by the specialist,” Kanabar concluded.
