Dar es Salaam. The Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA) in will undergo a major rehabilitation following the injection of $100 million by an investor from Oman.The project, expected to start in eight months, will be undertaken by Al-Hayat Development and Investment Limited.
The company’s chief executive officer, Sheikh Salim bin Al-Harthy, told a news conference yesterday shortly after visiting the airport that the investment would include re-enforcement of security facilities.
Sheikh AL-Harthy added that the project would also involve the construction of a 25-storey building in Dar es Salaam city centre to be known as Muscat Tower. He said the investment package would also be spent on reviving Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL) by training engineers and acquiring planes.
Sheikh Al-Harthy said the implementation of the project to be done in phases planes to be acquired by the national carrier would first provide commercial flights within the country. “We intend to acquire eight aircraft, two Embraer 175 and six Bombardier planes,” said the Al-Hayat Development and Investment Limited chief executive.
He said ATCL would start flying abroad after it had stabilized its internal flights.
He said the investment was in response to an appeal by President Jakaya Kikwete when he visited Oman , where he invited Oman investors to Tanzania.
The Minister for Transport,Dr Harrison Mwakyembe, said the investment will boost the country’s economy.
