Tanzania's forgotten track star

In 1974 Filbert Bayi beats New Zealand's John Walker, left, and Ben Jipcho of Kenya, right, to win the 1500-meters and set a new World Record at the Commonwealth Games in Christchurch, New Zealand.
Filbert Bayi #42 of Tanzania rounds the bend during the 5000-meter event at the AAA Championships in Crystal Palace, London in June 1978.
However, Bayi, pictured here during the medal ceremony at the 1974 Commonwealth Games, says that many forget his achievements because he never took a medal at the Olympic Games.
Today Bayi is fulfilling a lifelong dream running several schools in Tanzania alongside his wife. "You know why, because I love children. I want to return my services to children and there was no other way," he says.
From a class of just seven kids held in a garage to several schools with 1300 students and 120 employees, Bayi believes his success as an educator is a miracle.
Next came a challenge from the country's president, Jakaya Kikwete, to establish an athletics club to develop young talent. Here former British Olympian and chairman of the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games, Sebastian Coe, pictured in the gray shirt on the right, visited one of the clubs in Dar Es Salaam on February 7, 2012.

Kweli iko kazi.
