Malawi president seeks amicable border solution
Malawian President Peter Mutharika has invited President Jakaya Kikwete to visit his country. According to a statement issue by the Directorate of Presidential Communications in Dar es Salaam, Mr Mutharika reiterated that the two countries are long time allies that should always maintain that cordial friendship.
“We are all related, we are one people with close relations that have existed for many years. Our tribes exist in both sides of our borders,” he explained.

President Mutharika said Tanzania was a home to him, and he studied at the University of Dar es Salaam even before President Jakaya Kikwete joined the institution.

Adding to the invitation, President Mutharika told his counterpart that he would be privileged to eat fish with president Kikwete at the shore of Lake Nyasa.

“I assumed office in difficult ways and it has not been easy for me to visit some neighbouring countries,” he said. President Kikwete thanked President Mutharika for the invitation, apologising that he was unable to attend his swearing-in ceremony because of the abrupt nature of the announcement.

“On behalf of Tanzanians, I would like to congratulate you, Your Excellency for the victory and the big respect that the people of Malawi have given you,” he said.

President Mutharika was sworn-in as Malawi’s president after the High Court rejected a request for a recount following allegations of vote-rigging in May, this year.
