Dr. Agnes Kijazi, TMA Director General
and Permanent Representative of Tanzania with the World Meteorological
Organization (WMO) and Dr. Rob Varley, the UK Met Office Chief Executive
Officer and Permanent Representative of UK with WMO signed a memorandum of
understanding for a joint project in support of Climate Service Development in
Tanzania. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Dr. Ladislaus Chang’a, TMA
Director of Research and Applied Meteorology and Ms. Jane Wardley from the UK
Met Office.
The Tanzania
Meteorological agency (TMA) and the UK Met Office have signed an agreement for a
joint project on Climate Service Development in Tanzania. The MoU was signed on
the 11th of November, 2014 during the recent session of the
Intergovernmental Board for Climate Services (IBCS) held in Geneva Switzerland.
Explaining about the
co-operation Dr. Agnes Kijazi said the Tanzania Meteorological Agency requested
the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) to support TMA on the modernization
of climate services in the country and the UK Met Office agreed to assist TMA
in that process through WMO. ‘The MoU we
have signed today will contribute towards modernization of climate services in
the country. The DFID trough the UK Met Office will provide 70,000 Pounds to support
capacity building on service delivery and digitization of historical climate
data focusing on few stations’ said Dr. Kijazi.
On
the other hand, the UK Met Office Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Rob Varley
expressed his appreciation for the on-going co-operation between the Tanzania
Meteorological Agency and the UK Met Office.
Dr. Rob Varley promised to enhance collaboration and support TMA on its
endeavor to modernize the climate services in the country.
