President Jakaya Kikwete has conceded - and regretted - his failure to change and grow the agricultural sector over the course of his ten years at the State House.
According to a statement from the Directorate of Presidential Communications circulated to the media yesterday, the president, who is on a three-day official visit to the Netherlands, admitted to the fact in his talks with the country’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Bert Koenders.
"It is sad that I have failed to change and make the agricultural sector grow and hence many people “have continued to be poor,” the president admitted.
“It is a sector that incorporates many Tanzanians and needs much effort,” he acknowledged.
“Most people rely on the agriculture sector but it has neither grown at the required pace nor has it been given the required priority,” the president went on to admit.
He said over the past ten years of his leadership, while other sectors have grown, that has not been the case for agriculture.
“We need modern agriculture and farmers need loans,” he said and pledged that even after he retires from office, he would continue to fight for agricultural development so as to reduce poverty.
“In addition to the continuous growth of the economy, we need to increase efforts to reduce poverty,” the president said.
The President said Tanzania utilises well all the assistance it gets from development partners since to a large extent, efforts to ensure economic growth have been successful.
He mentioned examples of such achievements as reduction of the inflation rate from 18.6 per cent during the economic downturn in 2011 to the present 4.5 per cent.
The Netherlands Foreign Affairs Minister, Bert Koenders, pledged his country’s continued assistance to Tanzania following the President’s appeal.
