Commemoration

Dear friends, Nyerere supporters, and fellow justice activists –

On Sunday, November 15, 2015, the Julius K. Nyerere Commemoration committee plans to convene its 7th Annual program commemorating the life and work of Julius Kambarage Nyerere (1st President of Tanzania) at Gallery Serengeti, located at 7919 Central Avenue, Capitol Heights, MD 20743 (301.808.6987) from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. We anticipate an exciting program and hope to feature a number of the stars and justice fighters from past programs.  We seek your support and will be holding several meetings to finalize the program. Elvira Williams of AHEAD has agreed to be our keynote speaker once again. We hope to make this a fundraiser supporting AHEAD, continuing its 40+ years of work successfully improving maternal and infant health outcomes in Tanzania.

For years, the work of the Julius K. Nyerere Commemoration has been principally supported by the Tingling-Clemmons clan; we are now both retired and it has become more challenging.  We suggest a $25 donation to offset basic expenses. In addition to supporting AHEAD, funds are needed to support and honor our artists (who we never take for granted) and to provide food for the repast.

The Gallery is an apt venue for this important program, with its phenomenal African art displays, operated by Wisson West, who spent some of his formative years in Tanzania and has been a supporter of the Julius K. Nyerere Commemorations since their inception. We continue to reach out to involve the Tanzanian Embassy; we hope to invite master drummer/dancer/artist Melvin Deal, griot Baba-C, vocal artist Anna Mwalagho, DC’s own songstress Luci Murphy, Mwiza Munthali of TransAfrica / WPFW’s Africa Now, Jessica Mushala of S.H.I.N.A. Inc., Dr. John Rutayuga of Ukimwi Orphans Assistance, and others. Julius K. Nyerere Commemoration is also accepting sponsors / co-sponsors.

We encourage your participation in this annual endeavor to keep alive Mwalimu Nyerere’s mission by continuing the fight against poverty, ignorance and disease.
