I guess a whole bunch of we Zanzibaris, especially Zanzibaris from Pemba, are completely brainwashed. Maalim, narcissistic as he is, is clearly the least qualified person to preach about democracy. He has been CUF Secretary General and the party's presidential candidate since multiparty system was reintroduced in Tanzania, more than twenty years ago. Democracy should start at the party level. There can be no democracy at the country level if there's no democracy at the party level. It's that simple! Is CUF so politically bankrupt that Maalim is the only member who can competently serve as Secretary General or run for Zanzibar president?
If Dr. Shein is a dictator, as Maalim tries to paint him, then we should all agree that Maalim is a dictator par excellence (the worst dictator we have ever had in Zanzibar history)! Anyone who has shown serious interest in replacing him has perished politically from the party. Under normal circumstances, the party's chairman is the most powerful party leader, but this is not the case within CUF. In fact, no chairman has wielded more power than has Maalim (secretary general), in CUF's history.
