Maisha Community Initiatives (MCI) is a
registered non-governmental organization providing social and economic empowerment
programs to enhance the livelihood outcomes of vulnerable youth in the poor
urban community of Kinondoni District in Dar es Salaam.
For five years, the organization has been
working with young drug and substance abusers through awareness, preventive and
rehabilitative programs in Kigogo ward, under the Kigogo Residents Development
Initiatives (KIREDI), which facilitated
training in life skills, HIV/AIDS, psychosocial support, income generating,
microfinance as well as formal and informal educational programs.
Due to poverty, lack of access to education
and employment opportunities, drug and substance abuse among youth in Dar es
Salaam is on the increase. According to
the African Journal of Drug
& Alcohol Studies, (2006),
approximately 10 percent of the population in Dar es Salaam is abusing drugs,
making it a serious public health issue. This crisis calls for comprehensive
community-based preventive and rehabilitative programs, which are able to
support positive social and economic integration of youth. Therefore, Maisha
Community Initiatives is requesting for support to scale up the implementation
of youth development programs for vulnerable youth in the poor urban
communities of Dar es Salaam.
