Biggest Celebrity Breakups of 2012

Apparently, marriage can really ruin a relationship! Actor Martin Lawrence and Shamicka Lewis dated for 15 years and had two children before marrying in April 2010. Sadly, the couple announced plans to divorce in April – less than two years after swapping vows.
Remember how shocking it was to see Tom Cruise jumping on Oprah's couch about being in love with Katie Holmes? Well, it was just as shocking to hear in June that Cruise, 50, and Holmes, 33, were divorcing after five years of marriage and six years as the parents of the world's most famous celebrity offspring, Suri. The two legally finalized their divorce in August, but they actually settled it only a week after Holmes blindsided Cruise with her decision to leave, according to E! News. Multiple reports have blamed the split on Cruise's controversial religion, Scientology.
Stevie Wonder and Kai Millard Morris, the fashion designer he married in 2001, decided to separate in 2009. But it was only this year that Wonder made the breakup official when he filed for divorce in August. At 62, the "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours" singer has walked down the aisle twice, and has seven children.
Dennis Quaid and his wife Kimberly Buffington-Quaid, who famously sued after their newborn twins were given an almost lethal dose of medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A., are a couple no more. The actor announced he was ending his third marriage (his second was to actress Meg Ryan) after almost eight years together in March. But Buffington pulled the divorce papers she had filed just one month later so the two could work on their marriage, according to People. By October, Buffington had changed her mind and filed for legal separation,
"Bachelor" host Chris Harrison and his wife of 18 years, Gwen Jones, split in May. The couple, who has two sons together, met in college. Interestingly enough, they went their separate ways just a couple of months after the most recent "Bachelor," Ben Flajnik, proposed to Courtney Robertson on the show, and a few months before Flajnik and Robertson called off their wedding for good. "Bachelorette" Emily Maynard and Jef Holm have also since called...
Did anyone really think this one was going to last? Hulk Hogan's ex-wife Linda, 48, and her 29-year-younger boyfriend Charlie Hill called it quits in May after almost four years together, two of which they were engaged. Come to think of it, the couple, who met when Hill was a classmate of Hogan's daughter Brooke, lasted a lot longer than expected!
For 14 years, the actor/singer/all-around cool guy Johnny Depp, 49, was coupled up with French model/actress/singer Vanessa Paradis, 39, with whom he has two children. He shot down rumors of trouble in the spring, but by June, Depp confirmed that the two were dunzo. As usual, they were fiercely private about the demise of their relationship, but Paradis did let a few comments slip about love in an interview with French Elle just two days before the breakup became public. "When you meet the love of your life, it's just obvious and natural and easier," she told the mag. "You keep learning all the time. Sometimes you could be in an unhappy relationship; you are very much in love with someone, but it's making you unhappy and you think things can change and you can work it out." Depp has reportedly moved on with actress Amber Heard.
Denise Richards, who was once married to Charlie Sheen, seems to have a thing for bad boys! Following her 2006 split with Sheen, Richards almost immediately began a relationship Bon Jovi rocker Richie Sambora. They started seeing each other in 2006, and ended things in 2007, before reuniting in November 2011. In mid-June 2012, Richards confirmed to Us Weekly that the couple had called off their romance, although their friendship remained intact. "We went through a lot," she noted. "Years ago we both lost our parents at the same time and were going through other stuff, so we'll always have a bond with each other and we will stay good friends forever."
Just days after Miley Cyrus revealed that she was engaged to her honey Liam Hemsworth in June, her big brother Trace Cyrus announced that he had been dealing with a breakup. The 23-year-old rocker parted ways with "Social Network" actress Brenda Song, 24, his fiancée and girlfriend of about two years. "Brenda and I have decided to go our separate ways," Cyrus said in a statement. "We split up a couple of months ago. We will continue to focus on our careers."
Former Spice Girl Melanie "Sporty Spice" Chisholm, 38, split with her partner of a decade, Thomas Starr, in July. The couple had one daughter, 3-year-old Scarlet. Do you think she sang "Goodbye" when he left? Yeah, probably not!
Unlike a lot of celeb couples do when they break up, Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine and his Victoria's Secret model girlfriend Anne Vyalitsyna didn't release a joint statement claiming that they were still friends when they ended things in April. According to Us Weekly, that's because Levine was "blindsided" by his
Vera Wang, 63, is known as the go-to dress designer for celebrity weddings. So it was somewhat ironic in July when she and her husband Arthur Becker announced plans to end their marriage after 23 years and two daughters together. The L.A. Timesspeculated that perhaps Wang's personal woes had influenced the black wedding dresses that she unveiled for the fall. Despite their impending divorce, Wang and Becker can expect to see a lot of each other in the future, since they both reportedly run her fashion empire. She's rumored to have moved on with former U.S. Olympic figure skater
When "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star Adrienne Maloof and her husband of nine years Paul Nassif split in July, all hell broke loose! The two promptly swapped accusations of physical and verbal abuse, and she even made claims that Nassif has abused their three young sons. In November, the two seemed to forge a truce when they finally settled their divorce. "I pray that we can co-parent together and put the past behind us and both get into therapy," Maloof confessed on "Extra" in November. Do you think they'll be able to keep things friendly?
Not that we don't want Bret Michaels to find true love, but his current single status means that there's always a chance for another of his classic VH1 dating show "Rock of Love"! He and his on-again, off-again girlfriend of almost 18 years and fiancée for more than one of those years, Kristi Gibson, announced the end of their rocking romance in July. "Although the couple have separated, they remain great friends and are committed to jointly raising their two daughters, Raine and Jorja," a rep for Michaels confirmed to Gossip Cop.
Singer and "Magic City" actress Willa Ford, 31, and her former NHL hockey player hubby, Mike Modano, 42, called time out on their marriage in August. The two tied the knot in 2007, and began dating back in 2002.
The marriage of NFL star Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson and Evelyn Lozada makes that of Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries look long-lasting! Johnson and Lozada were husband and wife for just 41 days when she filed for divorce. Lozada's decision to leave came in August, three days after Johnson was arrested on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge for head-butting Lozada. After the incident, not only was Johnson's marriage over, so was his career with the Miami Dolphins, which promptly cut him from the team. Plans for a VH1 reality show, "Ev and Ocho," were also quickly scrapped. "Domestic violence is not okay, and hopefully my taking a stand will help encourage other women to break their silence as well," Lozada said
The man that Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank dated after her 2007 split with then-husband Chad Lowe turned out to be more than just a rebound guy. The "Million Dollar Baby" star, 38, spent five years in a relationship with her agent John Campisi, which only ended in August of this year.
When Jenny McCarthy and her NFL boyfriend, Bryan Urlacher, ended their relationship of about four months in August, McCarthy released a statement that sounded a little more sincere than the usual "we wish each other the best." Instead, the 40-year-old Playboy model was more candid. "[We have] decided to turn our romance into an amazing friendship," she told Us Weekly. "I will continue to be the biggest cheerleader for him. Go, Bears!"
Tennis star Maria Sharapova, 25, became a single lady in the spring, but she didn't reveal her break up with fiance of two years, former Los Angeles Laker Sasha Vujacic, until the U.S. Open ... in August! "I was waiting for someone to actually ask me that question, but nobody did directly," Sharapova said. "It was a really nice period of time for both of us, but our career schedules just made it extremely difficult to see each other with the traveling, and especially his career move to Turkey," where Vujacic relocated to play basketball.
This is no laughing matter! Comedians Amy Poehler and Will Arnett made a cute married couple for nine years, then sadly announced their split in September. The "Parks and Recreation" star and "Up All Night" actor have two young sons together, 4-year-old Archie and 2-year-old Abel.
That Chris Brown is always causing controversy! In October, it was because of the way he ended things with his girlfriend of eight months, Karrueche Tran. "I have decided to be single to focus on my career," Brown told Us Weekly. "I love Karrueche very much but I don't want to see her hurt over my friendship with Rihanna. I'd rather be single allowing us to both be happy in our lives." Um, friendship? Brown and RiRi have a complicated relationship, but it seemed during and after Brown's relationship with Tran to be a bit more than friendly. For example, the magazine reports that Brown kissed Rihanna, who he famously assaulted in 2009, on the lips in front of a crowd of people at the MTV Video Music Awards in September, weeks before he was a single man
Dennis Quaid and his wife Kimberly Buffington-Quaid, who famously sued after their newborn twins were given an almost lethal dose of medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in L.A., are a couple no more. The actor announced he was ending his third marriage (his second was to actress Meg Ryan) after almost eight years together in March. But Buffington pulled the divorce papers she had filed just one month later so the two could work on their marriage, according to People. By October, Buffington had changed her mind and filed for legal separation, but it was Quaid who filed for divorce the following month. Not surprisingly, he requested joint custody of the twins.
Expect Taylor Swift to come out with a new song about her summer of love. The 23-year-old and Conor Kennedy, 18, had a memorable affair that began in July involving romps along the beaches of the Kennedy family compound in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, and Kennedy family weddings in Boston, but it all came to an end in the fall. Perhaps because Swift's beau had to return to high school, while she hit the road to promote her latest album, Red. Whatever the reason, apparently the two ended things on good terms! On December 3, Conor's extended family honored Swift with the Ripple of Hope Award from the RFK Center for Justice and Human Rights for her commitment to social change.
Oscar-winning actor and New Zealand native Russell Crowe and his wife of nine years, Australian actress Danielle Spencer, revealed plans to end their nine-year union in October. The bombshell came three months after Spencer was seen cozying up to Damian Whitewood, her partner on the Australian version of "Dancing With the Stars," E! reported. The couple, who met on the set of the 1990 movie "The Crossing," have two sons together.
The news that Jessica and Ashlee Simpson's parents Joe, 54, and Tina, 52, had filed for divorce was surprising, not only because they'd been married since 1978, but because the story broke in October at the same time the National Enquirer reported that former pastor Joe had just come out to his family as gay. Tina cited "discord or conflict of personalities," in court papers, according to People. Still, a rep denied the story. "It is an amicable split and there is no third party involved," said the rep. "Any other related allegations are completely false." Think the rumors are true?
Serial modelizer Leonardo DiCaprio, who's dated Gisele Bundchen and Bar Refaeli, broke up with his latest love interest, 23-year-old Victoria's Secret star Erin Heatherton, in October. Us Weekly cited an insider when it reported that it had "been a few weeks" and that it was due to their crazy schedules. DiCaprio, 37, seems like a George Clooney in the making!
We're not sure whether we should be sad about this breakup, or just relieved. Bobbi Kristina Brown, 19, and her 22-year-old fiancé, Nick Gordon, who also happens to be the boy that Bobbi Kristina's mom Whitney Houston raised as a son, decided to call off their romance and, you know, just go back to being essentially siblings in late November. Gordon tweeted the news of the split, whichconveniently happened a few weeks into the run of Lifetime's new reality series about the Houston clan, "The Houstons: On Our Own."
Cute couple Kimora Lee Simmons and Djimon Honsou revealed their split in November after five and a half years together. While the couple never married, they had a son, 3-year-old Kenzo, whose sisters are Ming, 12, and Aoki, 10, Simmons' daughters from her marriage to media mogul Russell Simmons. "There have been quite a few hurtful rumors circulating," she tweeted. "The truth is Djimon + I have been separated for some time. We have remained happy, loving, co-parenting friends + family. We all have much to be thankful for."
After a year and a half of long distance dating, Ashlee Simpson, 28, and “Boardwalk Empire” star Vincent Piazza went their separate ways shortly after Thanksgiving. The single mom, who was formerly married to Fall Out Boy Pete Wentz, had been splitting her time between her Los Angeles home and New York City, where her former sweet films his hit HBO show. "There was no bad blood and no third party involved. It was honestly just a long distance relationship and it became too hard to make it work," Simpson’s pals told Us Weekly. However, the “Pieces of Me” singer isn’t letting her single status get her down. Instead she’s been working on a new album and getting into the holiday spirit. “Tis the season..got my lights up today.
Remember those really bad break ups you had in high school? Well, this was probably just as ugly as that! Rob Kardashian, 25, went on a Twitter tirade in early December after he and reported girlfriend of a few months, Rita Ora, 22, called it quits. The dress sock designer stopped short of mentioning Ora's name when he ranted about a girl cheating on him with "nearly 20 dudes." He continued, "I wonder how many she will sleep with now that we apart" and plenty of other spiteful words. Meanwhile, Ora kept her cool and claimed that the broken relationship was simply a casualty of busy schedules. "We were close for a while, but it didn't work because I was never there," she said in the January issue ofGlamour U.K.
Big Bang Theory" actress Mayim Bialik, 36, is now a single mom. The former "Blossom" star and her husband, Michael Stone, who famously practice attachment parenting with their two young sons, made plans to divorce public in late November. In a statement Bialik posted on her website, she insisted that her unorthodox lifestyle choice didn't affect the couple.
