TRA earns 200m/- from personalised licence plates

Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has reaped more than 200m/- in terms of fees collected from personalised number plates registered from July 2012 to present.

The fixed charge for personalised number plates is 5m/- per car and the plates are renewable after three years. As of now TRA has recorded more than 41 vehicles with personal number plates.

According to information obtained from the TRA Tax Payers’ Education Service Department in Dar es Salaam, about 41 cars have been registered under the arrangement. This arrangement is a new tax gathering initiative introduced in the national budget last year.
According to Tax Payers’ Education Department data, out of 41 vehicles, 39 were registered by Dar businesspersons alone, and in total, the authority has collected 205m/-.

Following that trend, TRA is placed to set realistic tax collection projects and to advise the government accordingly during the forthcoming financial year, according to the department plans.

The 41 applicants of the personalised number plates are all locals, among them, four were women.

The tax Payers’ Education Department noted that the personalised number plates registered are only applicable in Mainland and not in Zanzibar.

The personalised licensed plates according to the Minister of Finance, Dr William Mgimwa may have inscriptions of names or other personal marks instead of the normal national registration system that has a combination of letters and numerals.
