U.S. Embassy Tanzania

Ambassador Alfonso E. Lenhardt cuts a ribbon during the inauguration of a new specialized Tuberculosis (TB) laboratory recently at the Mbeya Referral Hospital (MRH) sponsored by the American people. This is the second laboratory in the country of this kind. Since 2004, the United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and U.S. Department of Defense have partnered with the Mbeya Referral Hospital to combat HIV/AIDS in Tanzania. He also visited the Service Health and Development for PLWHA (SHDEPHA), a local civic society organization in the region which provides support to the community in combating HIV/AIDS. The Ambassador toured several income generating activities offered by SHDEPHA and lauded the organization's progress and effectiveness at promoting quality health care services to Tanzanians since his last visit in 2009.
