Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) insisted yesterday that the Taifa Stars-Bafana Bafana match should go ahead as planned on May 14, despite South Africa saying it had been rescheduled.Various South African media reported that the TFF and Safa had agreed on pushing back the warm-up to May 28, but information officer of the former, Boniface Wambura, denied the reports.
“The game has not been postponed,” he told The Citizen by telephone. “The TFF expects the friendly to take place as planned because there is no agreement reached.”Wambura pointed out that South Africa had requested the match to be pushed back, but the TFF is yet to give them a nod. “We did not enter into any agreement of that sort, but we understand that they asked for the postponement of the match,” he added.
Safa said in a statement that the game would still be played in Dar es Salaam as originally scheduled.
“We have agreed with our counterparts to move the game to May 28th, which will allow both nations adequate time to prepare for their respective forthcoming 2011 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers,” read the statement.
It remains to be seen whether the TFF will agree on a new date. However, if the match takes place, it will only serve to strengthen Stars, but will not affect positions in the Fifa rankings. For Bafana Bafana, the warm-up would be the side's final game before they take on Egypt in Cairo on June 3 in their Group G.
South Africa top the group with seven points from three games following two wins and a draw. The game will also serve as a final build-up for Taifa Stars, who will also travel to the Central African Republic for the Afcon qualifier second leg tie against the hosts on June 4. Stars are second in Group D.
