Country Director Job Description

Global Service Corps-Tanzania is looking for a Country Director

Working Station: Arusha office
Starting date: No later than April 1, 2012
Duration: Two year contract, renewable yearly thereafter. Half-time position during orientation period, transitioning into full time.
Organization Background: Global Service Corps – Tanzania (GSC-TZ) is a Tanzania international Service-Learning NGO that is a subsidiary of Global Service Corps (GSC), a nonprofit organization registered in California, USA. GSC-TZ presently promotes food security, HIV/AIDS prevention and nutrition innovations in 48 communities in the northern zone of Tanzania, and subcontracts to train other Tanzanian community leaders and NGOs in these interventions. GSC-TZ also hosts international and local Tanzanian short-term service-learning volunteers, college interns and semester-abroad students, who accompany the local team in its work.
 Main duties and responsibilities:
Coordinate GSC-TZ’s Food Security, HIV/AIDS and Nutrition program portfolio with a focus on sustainable agriculture and related HIV/AIDS and malnutrition prevention programs.
Coordinate and provide instruction in GSC-TZ’s service-learning programs which focus on cross-cultural understanding and community development.
Acquire grant funding to promote programs of Global Service Corps-Tanzania, and assist with the management of funding.
• Take overall responsibility for programming and supervision of ongoing and new agricultural initiatives, HIV/AIDS and nutrition projects within GSC-TZ.
Supervise a staff of 35 in program and administrative activities.
Liaise between GSC-TZ and sector stakeholders; promote and facilitate partnerships and collaborations.
Monitor compliance with overall specific program and technical terms of reference.
Work closely with the GSC International Director and provide periodic reporting on priority performance areas.
Qualification and competencies:
Masters Degree (minimum) in Agriculture or International Development with a focus on agriculture and/or public health (PhD preferred).
Program design, and proposal and report writing skills; proven success in fund development.
Excellent management skills; proven competency in supervising local staff.
Program monitoring & evaluation including community needs assessment.
Skills and experience:
Written and conversational excellence in English and conversational fluency in Kiswahili.
Experience of at least 5 years in agriculture programming, budgeting and report writing.
Five years minimum experience working in East Africa, preferably Tanzania.
Ten years minimum working experience in the USA or other English-speaking country in agriculture, community development, business, nutrition and/or HIV/AIDS.
Experience in designing, appraisal and implementation of various projects as a program director of a major international NGO or as a country director.
Familiarity with USAID rules and regulations is advantageous.
Sustainable agriculture, HIV/AIDS and nutrition program background.
Experience working with NGOs and/or communities in Tanzania/East Africa for at least two years.
• Must be computer literate in MS Word and Excel.
• Must have integrity in personal conduct, sensitivity to diversity, initiative & direction, adaptability, flexibility and interpersonal skills; must be prepared to grow with the organization and be willing to learn.
