12 INTERESTING THINGS ABOUT ME

By Helena Nyerere

Hey guys! So I know it's been a while since I posted anything, and like I've said in my recent post, I am working on consistency. So guys, I have so much in store for you, so many topics I would like to discuss, and so many stories I would love to share with you all. Eventually, we will get into all that good stuff, but before we do that, I think we should get to know each other a little bit better first. So because I adore you all so much, I have generated a list of the 12 most interesting things about me! Leggoooooo!!!

1. I sucked my thumb until I was 20. I remember growing up, my mom would put chili pepper on my thumb when I would sleep at night so I won't get the urge to suck my thumb, but that never actually stopped the kid haha. It wasn't until I was twenty, when I became a bacteria freak! Any type of germs freaked me out. I would always walk around with hand sanitizer. I remember one night I attended a college party, and one of my friends got really intoxicated. Hours later she was throwing up all over the place and no one wanted to help her, so I managed to take her to the bathroom and cleaned her off. In the process, my precious thumb, came in contact with the throw up (yuck) and after that my life would never be the same again haha. I was so disgusted, and I thought to myself, why in the world do I suck my thumb when it comes in contact with bacteria everyday? It just didn't make sense to me anymore, sucking my thumb after that incident was like indirectly eating my friend's throw up (even though I washed my hands over and over again) haha. After that day, I just stopped and I vowed to never suck my thumb again. That explains my lisp.

2. I would rather not show up at all than to be late. I am the type of person that hates being late, although I am always late, I try to avoid it as much as possible. But if I am really late, I just won't show up. I think it's rude as hell to show up to an event late, but of course it happens! How to avoid it? Don't show up at all if you know it's not within your control. This is me.

3. My first job was at a hair braiding salon. I remember growing up, my mom had this friend named Melanie, she was from cameroon and she had a hair braiding salon. Melanie would always do me and my sister's hair. So one day my mom goes, "You guys need jobs, so I'm going to be taking you to Melanie on the weekends so you two can learn how to make money and be responsible." And we did just that lol, every Saturday and Sunday, my mom will drop us off at Melanie's salon at 5am, and we would work for the whole day. We did that for about 4-5 years before starting our own braiding business. It was a nice little side hustle, still is haha. Hit me and my sis up if you need some braids haha. Dead serious though.

4. I have never in my life ate the yolk that is located in the center of a boiled egg, well may be I have once haha. But I will NEVER eat that again because it is the most nastiest thing I have ever tasted in my life. First off all, the yolk has too much cholesterol, I mean I know it has protein too but "having too much cholesterol" is the reason I give people when they ask me why I don't eat the yolk. If I eat a boiled egg, I would only eat the egg whites then throw away the rest. The smell is horrendous, and I just can't get jiggy with it.

5. I am a Communications major with a track of Public Relations and Journalism, is it the obvious? hahaha...

6. I have a birth mark on my left ankle that's about the size of an iPhone 4. I remember growing up, my sister Julia would always say the mark was there because I didn't know how to properly take showers haha! One day, her and her friend tried scrubbing the mark off of my ankle and it hurt so bad, once she saw that it actually wasn't coming off then she finally believed it was an actual birthmark.

7. I make to-do-lists for EVERYTHING. No seriously I do. It keeps me on track, and because I always forget the things that I need to do, writing them down and ticking them off keeps me persistent. I hate having an incomplete to-do list so if I write something on my to-do list it will get done.

8. I try to make sure that everyday is a bad hair day for me just so I can have an excuse to wear a head wrap. I love the head wrap concept. Want to know a secret? I feel the most beautiful when I wear head wraps. During the past few years I've been wearing head wraps a lot more often than weave, and boy does it feel good. Not only does it make me feel beautiful, but I also stand out! I wear a head wrap everywhere! It's fun to tie it in different styles. I have many head wraps and I try to buy as many colors as possible to make sure I have a variety. Head wraps is not only my thing, it is the thing.

9. I don't like ice in my drinks. I don't see how one can like ice in their drinks. It always makes my drink watery and then my body starts getting cold. You go to a restaurant, you order a fruit punch (that's coming from a fountain that is ALREADY cold) and then you ask for ice? How sway? Anyways, that's just my perspective.

10. I'm obsessed with Fragrances. I probably spend more money on fragrances than anything else. I am that one girl that always smell good. I love perfume, especially expensive ones. If you know me well enough then you know that I am obsessed with Givenchy perfumes. I feel like as a woman, you should ALWAYS smell and look good.

11. I hate carrying purses. I try my best to avoid carrying purses at all times. The only time you would probably see me carrying a purse, is if I'm attending

some formal event, or if I am traveling. I feel like carrying purses is a baggage, LITERALLY. Every time I carry a purse I feel like I'm being stopped from greatness haha.

12. Absolutely hate drinking soda. You will never see me purchase a soda. I feel like soda is only good for curing hangovers, and since I have eliminated alcohol from my life, I won't be needing any soda haha. No seriously, soda is extremely unhealthy and isn't worth risking my health for. Nowadays I drink much more water than anything else.

Can any of you relate? What are some interesting things about you? Tell me about it! Would love to hear your stories! One love! xoxoxo

An interesting piece. Sister Helena, I see contradiction in statements #9 and #12. Did I miss your point i.e. You like punch but distaste Soda? Scientifically speaking, these two beverages have proven to contain some of the most undesirable additives. My suggestion is for you to run away from both, in the same manner you surrendered alcohol.

Hello dear,

Thank you for sharing. I have a question for you, if you sacked your thumb until you were 20 yrs old, can we assume that was last week or so. If so you good. If not please take this as a humble honest opinion, try to change the people you surround yourself with, you truly have no bussiness to hang around with friends who are getting intoxicated, whatelse are they doing..they say show me your friends and I will tell you who you are. We looked up to your grandpa and we expect so much from you..its good you are getting your degree but not enough. Rise above and help us run our country someday, rise up, see what issues are facing your generation as you mentioned one already and challenge them what if someone assisted her and raped her was that responsible of her, yes you were kind enough then Be bold for change speak to our young women, start there. It goes so fast before you know you are of age. Indirectly you gave a voice to an issue, continue and make sure you rise above and be a leader and make us and mama proud.
Thank you for sharing.
