The police later found that the couple had an arms license and did not register a case against the foreign nationals

A Tanzanian couple Salum Chande Mbega and his wife Monica were detained at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shamshabad for carrying seven rounds of live bullets late on Monday night. The 60-year-old man and his wife were about to board their flight to Tanzania from Shamshabad when they were stopped after security personnel found live bullets in the man's luggage. The police later found that the couple had an arms license and did not register a case against the foreign nationals.

Investigating official J Bhaskar of the RGIA police station said that the couple arrived from Tanzania on February 4 to seek treatment for Salum's hypertension condition at Apollo Hospitals. Hospital authorities said he was a patient of hypertension and had neurology and urology related medical problems. Hospital authorities said he was admitted on February 4 and was discharged on Monday. It is learnt that he had come with his wife and one attendant and was discharged after doctors declared him fit to go back to his country. He was advised regular health check-ups after returning to Tanzania.

According to RGIA police station authorities, Mbega had a valid arms license and was well within his right to carry the live bullets. "He has a license and also possesses a pistol in his country. The license entitles him to carry up to 25 rounds of live bullets," said Bhaskar.

Till reports last came in, the police was yet to register a formal complaint to book him for illegal arms retention. According to the police, senior officials were in talks with the Tanzanian government and had asked them for information on the validity of Mbega's arms license. Investigating officials said an enquiry is on but the couple were allowed to leave. They said the couple were free to fly to their home country now.
